I let you know what a fantastic race you put on this past weekend. An inaugural marathon will usually have its glitches and hangups, but this race was smooth as silk. Packet pickup was quick and easy if you wanted it to be, and had a great atmosphere with awesome gear to purchase and people to chat with if you wanted to stay for a while. The goodie bag was excellent as well; great shirt, awesome tumbler, and info on nearby races. Perfect. Also, the location chosen for the pasta feed was welcoming to chatting with fellow runners.
Race day was exciting. Even though there were only 200 runners, it felt like a race that was set up for a thousand or more. The music and quick speeches set the tone, and the gunshot sent us off through one of the
most scenic routes I've ever been on. Shawnee is a beautiful park, and while you obviously can't set the course through the whole thing, we got a great feel for what southern Illinois can offer.
The volunteers deserve my medal. This was far and away the most impressive volunteer effort that I've seen on a course. They were constantly enthusiastic, made themes for the stops, brought their own food and drinks, and were extremely supportive of our efforts. At times, I was exhausted or straining mentally entering an aid station, but I left each and every one with a smile on my face. A thousand thanks to them.
Well, it goes without saying that I hope this isn't the first and only year. I should be able to beat that course record if I train well! Thanks for all of your hard work that went into a tremendously executed race. I'll be back next year, and I'm telling everyone I know to join me. A very satisfied runner," -Nicholas Cox
